The keep simple principle, is primarily aimed at the person who is interested in the health benefits offered by a balanced wellness program. What I recommend is that everyone find something they enjoy and do just that... enjoy the benefits of a healthy, manageable lifestyle.
If you remember nothing else-remember this, there are no magic potions, and very few unusual reasons people gain excess weight or are unhealthy. People get fat because they eat more calories than they burn for one reason or another. Your wellness program should be able to address these issues, to effectively get you started on your lifestyle management program.
The Cardinal Rules
Genetics - You cannot control your DNA and body chemistry! However, don’t use this as an excuse. Genetics factor in as a tendency, not as a lifetime fat sentence.
·
Diet - You have the ability to control and modify what and when you eat.
·
Exercise - In moderation and in conjunction with a sound and balanced diet.
It requires 3,500 calories to gain one pound. Simply stated, if your body requirements are around 14,000 calories weekly and you’re eating 15,000 calories a week, on a consistent basis, your weight will increase 10 pound or so a year.
I always get a kick out of people who say that they gained weight because they got older. While it is true that as we age, our net caloric needs decrease slightly as our lean muscle tissue decreases, that does not explain a 38 year old, 5’10” corporate executive who weighs in at 350 pounds. Most likely he weighs that much for two reasons; he leads a sedentary lifestyle, and eats far more calories than he needs.
So what does he do to lose the weight? What miracle of modern science will work most efficiently? “...what is necessary is already known.” “...know thyself and you will know them.” (Sheehan 113)
